Theodoor V., a nurse who worked at the Wilhelmina Hospital in Assen since October 2019, will remain in custody for at least 30 days longer. According to his lawyer and the Public Prosecution Service, V. is now being suspected of involvement in the death of about 20 patients. The deaths occurred during the period from March 2020 to May 2022, the period of the COVID-19 pandemic, while V. was working in the hospital as a nurse on the lung department, where COVID-19 patients were being treated.
V.'s arrest has led to shocked reactions from the public and the relatives of the deceased. However, the Public Prosecution Service has asked for restraint as there is still a lot of uncertainty surrounding the case. The relatives of the deceased have engaged the services of the victim advocate Sébas Diekstra to represent them. Diekstra has urged the Public Prosecution Service to provide more clarity on the investigation findings and suspicions against the nurse as soon as possible.
V. was identified as a suspect after a report from the hospital itself. The justice investigation is currently focusing solely on the Wilhelmina Hospital in Assen and the COVID-19 period. As V. is still in custody with restricted communication, there is little additional information available from the prosecution or his lawyer.
